Project overview.
I built Creative Characters from scratch during the dull days of the pandemic. Monotype was unable to schedule its usual in-person thought leadership events, and a podcast was proposed to fill that space. With no prior experience and limited resources, we began a program that is now in its sixth season with over 100 episodes to its name.
Creative Characters’ mission is to meet the people working at the intersection of type and everyday life. We interview type designers, creative directors, graphic designers, illustrators, and creatives who work in TV, film, music, and other industries that heavily leverage type. We have interviewed icons such as David Carson, Ellen Lupton, Annie Atkins, Malcom Garrett, alongside tiny independent type designers, printmakers, watch designers, and photographers.
The podcast expanded beyond the 1/1 format to include live recordings at SXSW, Adobe MAX, and on-site in unique locations such as Tipoteca in Italy and design studios in London.
In occasion to hosting occasional episodes, I direct the seasonal programming, record intros and prep hosts, oversee our excellent team of producers, and manage the budget.
Here are some of my favorite episodes (that I’ve hosted).
